The Jones Asteroid Eclipse Black is a performance-oriented binding that combines comfort, control, and versatility to perform in all conditions – from freeride destinations to all-mountain adventures. With a medium-soft flex (easier to maneuver) but still enough stiffness where needed, this is a binding for riders who want to carve, jump, slash and cruise without compromise.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Flex & Response | The Asteroid has a medium-soft flex, meaning it’s flexible enough for freestyle and playful riding, but stiff enough to maintain good control at high speed, hard compression, or more aggressive riding. |
| Highback: Dynamic Flex | The highback is designed with the Dynamic Flex construction: stiff in the middle to provide good support, softer on the sides for comfort and flexibility during lateral movements and to prevent “calf-bite”. |
| SkateTech chassis and hanger | Thanks to the SkateTech system, the power (energy) is transferred more efficiently from your boot to the edges of the board ‒ similar to the operation of skateboard trucks. This ensures a more direct edge feel and less energy loss. The hanger (reinforced, with fiberglass in the mix) is located in the chassis to combine stiffness and durability. |
| Straps: Ankle & Toe | The ankle strap is sturdy, comfortably shaped (3D), with sufficient stiffness when needed. The toe strap (3D Flex Fit 2.0) is flexible, adapts well to different shoe shapes and sits low for fewer pressure points. In addition, there is the “Flip-It” or “Freeride / Surf Mode” option: you can exchange bushings and straps to set the binding for more stiffness / response (Freeride Mode) or more playfulness / flexibility (Surf Mode). |
| Footbed and cushioning | Full-length EVA comfort foot cushion (“Comfort Foam Foot Pillow”) that dampens vibration and counteracts fatigue. 3D-shaped for good grip and to avoid snow accumulation. |
| Mounting & compatibility | Universal mounting disk that works with the traditional insert patterns (4×2, 4×4) as well as with EST / Channel systems. This allows you to mount this set under all kinds of boards. |
| Durability & hardware | Reinforced nylon (with approx. 30% fiberglass) in hanger/base parts provides strength without too much extra weight. The ratchets/buckles are robust, with strong levers & springs. Tool-less adjustments make adjustments easier on the go. |
All-Mountain / Freeride: Ideal. The binding offers enough stiffness and grip to ride hard, but with the option to add cushioning or playfulness with the Surf-mode bushings or softer straps when desired.
Freestyle / Park: Not the absolute top model in the park / jib world in terms of ultra-soft flex, but certainly capable. You get enough response for presses and small jumps, and with the medium-soft flex you feel less restricted.
Powder / Big Mountain: Thanks to the cushioning, good strap-fit and the possibility to adjust the binding a bit looser / more flexible, it also works in deep snow. The highback may even have less influence (depending on the setup) when you have real powder days.
Hard and icy conditions: The stiffer central part of the highback + SkateTech transfer ensure that you maintain control. However, you lack the ultra-stiffness of the best freeride or race bindings.
Weight: approximately 868 grams per pair in size M (Asteroid / similar models) ‒ this is quite normal for a binding with this construction and firmness.
Materials: Nylon with fiberglass reinforced parts, high-quality buckles, EVA footbed.
Modes: Freeride Mode vs Surf Mode (bushings/straps) for adjusting stiffness / response.
Sizes: usually different sizes (S, M, L) depending on EU/US shoe size compatibility. Make sure you choose the right size so that your boots are well centered.
Advantages:
Very good mix of comfort + responsiveness.
Many adjustment options (Freeride vs Surf mode), which allows you to tailor the binding to your style / terrain.
SkateTech ensures better energy transfer, less waste and more precision.
Robust hardware and durable materials.
Universal mounting, compatible with most snowboard boards.
Disadvantages / What to look out for:
For those who want to ride very stiff (e.g. race, steep freeride lines), it may be a bit too soft.
The binding weighs a little more than the lightest models; if weight is your priority (ski touring, ski mountaineering § splitboard), there are lighter options.
The adjustments of straps / bushings do take some time; if you want to switch on the go, you must be prepared.
The Jones Asteroid Eclipse Black 2023/2024 is an excellent binding for the snowboarder who wants one all-rounder: comfort, precision, versatility and durability. Whether you’re touring in the freeride, carving through groomers, hitting a park, or venturing into steeper descents: this binding adapts well. If you mainly have one discipline (e.g. only park with soft flex, or only race with ultra-stiffness), there may be more specialized choices, but for many riders this is a top option.
